The Names of God

© Issachar Tal van Kekem

We gave God Names… that describe His being
We gave God Names… implying that we know Him
Every Name is a trait… a quality we distinguish
We categorize Him… but can we TRULY know Him?

God is invisible… we know only His acts.
And not all we THINK we know… is indeed based on facts…
The stories of our Matriarchs, our kings, our prophets…
The stories of our Patriarchs… embellished perhaps?
Did we time and time again fall into the same traps?

When we name Him… could it, possibly, be…
That we describe the traits… we would LIKE to see?
And more so even… you might consider that,
The ones we describe and name… are we…

Man… gave names to the animals
After… God told him… to do so
Man… gave names to his children
So that… he could call them to his side
If to his rules… they would not abide
The names… we are endowed with at birth
Are merely labels… but used as a girth
To hold us in place… in the mind of our kin
To allocate us… and to reign us in!

No newborn… should have a name
He should EARN one… by blame or by fame
DESERVE one… not just proclaim:
But based on all the challenges…
He either failed… or overcame…

Should the very same… not go for God?
That He either DESERVES… or does not?
And that His name… to Him be accorded
By a peer… not by the mere
Midgets over whom He lorded?
When Moses asked, God told him:
“I am who I am”, and should that not suffice?
“I am who I am”, and that shall suffice!

God is Elohim: Multitude,
Meaning, He is in everything.
God is Yahweh: God is Existence
