The Two Great Lights

At first, a single cleaving shared by moon and sun
Both were radiant, as they were one
But the moon asked the Holy creator:
“Can two kings wear a single crown?”
The Holy One then commanded the moon to back down:
“I will not have you question my wisdom or my might!
Go diminish yourself: you will be the lesser light!”
At first created together in a single act
Though the sun accepted the fact
The moon objected to being jointly spawned
And having to exist within a single bond:
“When the sun already shines, who needs the moon?”
And “How can a little lamp shine at noon?!”
The beauty of the Creator is reflected in Creation
Causation must remain foundation
Therefore, the light of the moon is a mere reflection
While the sun shines in exuberant perfection
The moon is condemned to eternal introspection
Sun is Tif’érret
Moon is Shekhináh
Both bring forth angelic forces, in a glorious array
Sun is beauty, sun rules the day!
Moon is the Presence, moon rules the night
Blessed are the Watchers, there to ease man’s plight!
