Lyrics
My Spirit Shall Not Abide

The flowing, gushing river
Was conducting a higher spirit
From within the Tree of Life
Into the tree in which Death abides (Darkness over the face of the abyss)
As time and time again
Evil spirits were drawn to man
Through-and-through maleficent kinds
That confounded and distorted men’s minds (Darkness over the face of the abyss)
Chorus:
In despair, the human souls departed
And flew into wilderness, only to escape
The Holy One, disappointed, broken-hearted
Mourned their awful littleness, nothing to reshape… (Darkness over the face of the abyss)
My spirit shall not abide in mankind forever
For men, alas, are proven to be mere flesh
Rule on My behalf, I will not allow, never
Nor will I recreate man better, or afresh (Darkness over the face of the abyss, and across the expanse of Heaven)
God had given Moses only a hundred and twenty years
For he had sinned
Where the Children of Israel were to live, intra vires,
His promise the Holy One decided to rescind (Darkness over the face of the abyss)
Chorus:
Our famed tzaddik and teacher rabbi El’azár taught:
One day god will mend and ripen the spirit of man
In order to restore the world as He had wrought
The He will swallow death, as had, always, been His plan
Darkness over the face of the abyss, and across the face of the expanse of Heaven
